Bognor Regis

Bugger Bognor, said the king, accurately·West Sussex·South East England

Bognor Regis got its 'Regis' off George V, who used what felt like his dying breath to tell it to bugger off. The town took the curse as a compliment, slapped it on the welcome signs, and has been leaning into the joke ever since. This is where Billy Butlin trialled the holiday-camp formula before deciding Skegness was more his colour, and where a chunk of the 1944 floating harbour washed up on the beach and just stayed there because nobody could be bothered to move it. Honest seaside, no apologies, no Margate-style reinvention, no pretending it's Chichester.
