Blackheath, London

A very nice postcode wrapped around a gale·Greater London·London

Blackheath is an enormous, windswept field that people pay a fortune to live beside and then spend every dinner party defending. The name most likely comes from how bleak the place is, and anyone who has crossed the heath on foot in February will happily sign the affidavit. It claims to have brought golf to England, then lost the golf club to Eltham. Every spring the London Marathon starts here, which makes it the one morning of the year that thousands of people are photographed running away from Blackheath as fast as they can.
