Eltham

Royal palace, no Tube, standing room only·Greater London·London

Eltham spent the Middle Ages hosting kings for Christmas and has spent the time since explaining to cab drivers that it is still technically London. The palace still sits on its hill, the Tube never arrived, and the Yorkshire Grey at the bottom of Eltham Hill is now a McDonald's, which is about the right ratio of grandeur to lunch. It is south-east London for people who wanted a semi with a garden and made their peace with standing all the way to Charing Cross.
