Is Eltham a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Eltham.

Yes, Eltham is one of the safer parts of its borough, and by a clear margin. Crime here runs about a quarter below the Greenwich average. Violence makes up a smaller share of local crime than it does nationally. Car crime is the one category that runs high. For a suburb this size, the crime here is more often a stolen catalytic converter than anything that keeps people indoors.

Police.uk records about 90 crimes per 1,000 residents in Eltham over the year to May 2026, roughly 24% below the average for the Royal Borough of Greenwich. That comes to 7,415 recorded crimes over the twelve months, from June 2025 to May 2026. A full year of figures means one rough weekend can't bend the picture either way.

The same year's figure for the Royal Borough of Greenwich as a whole is about 118 crimes per 1,000 people, against Eltham's 90. The borough covers a lot of river frontage, town centre and night-time economy, so most of the difference comes from places that are busier after dark than Eltham High Street is.

Eltham is a built-up suburb, with an average of about 6,600 people per square kilometre across its neighbourhoods. Unemployment was about 4% at the 2021 Census, and about 7% of households were overcrowded. That makes it a dense, working, mostly housed suburb, with nothing in the numbers that marks it out from the rest of outer London.

Over the year to May 2026, violence and sexual offences were the largest category in Eltham at about 29% of recorded crime, against about 35% nationally. That label is a broad legal grouping that includes common assault where nobody was hurt, and it heads the list almost everywhere, so its smaller share here is the useful point. Anti-social behaviour was about 19% against 16% nationally, and shoplifting about 9% against 8%. Public order offences were about 7% here and about 7% nationally, and criminal damage and arson about 6% against 7%. Vehicle crime is the one category that stands out, at about 10% of local crime against 5% nationally. A suburb full of driveways and kerbside parking gives car thieves more to choose from. Police.uk's street-level map shows where those offences cluster, and it is worth checking the roads around any house you are seriously considering.

What happens after a report is a separate question from how much crime there is. The Metropolitan Police Service charges a suspect in about 10% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which puts it 33rd of 42 forces. In about 53% of cases the investigation closes with no suspect identified. Those are figures for the whole Metropolitan Police area, taking in every borough the force covers, and they say nothing about whether Eltham is safe. They do say that if your car is broken into, the odds of anyone being charged for it are poor.

Safety is one of Eltham's real strengths: crime runs well below the borough's level, the violent share is lower than the national one, and the main thing to guard against is someone going through the glovebox.
