Battle, East Sussex

A town still dining out on Harold's worst day·East Sussex·South East England

Battle has been living off one afternoon in 1066 for nearly a thousand years and sees no reason to change the business model now. The abbey gatehouse stands at the end of the High Street like the town's most expensive sign, the hall houses behind it lean in on a High Street stuck firmly in the past, and the town's other famous product was some of the finest gunpowder in Europe, right up until it kept exploding. People move here for the peace and quiet, which is a brave thing to want from a town named after a slaughter whose bonfire society claims to be the oldest in Sussex.
