Pevensey

William the Conqueror landed here and left.·East Sussex·South East England

1066 and all that, but with a village attached. William the Conqueror landed here, looked around, and immediately marched somewhere else, which turns out to be the founding tradition. What remains is a fragment of Roman wall, a Norman keep the Puritans couldn't be bothered to finish demolishing, and a flat expanse of drained marsh where the fen raft spider outranks most of the residents by tenure. The place has been quietly ignored by history for about eight centuries, and the people who live here mostly want to keep it that way.
