Is Battle, East Sussex a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Battle, East Sussex.

Yes, about as safe as the district it sits in. Crime runs level with the rest of Rother. Violence and sexual offences make up a smaller share of the total here than they do nationally. Anti-social behaviour makes up a larger one. The typical Battle complaint is about nuisance, not danger.

Police recorded crime in Battle at about 76 per 1,000 people in the year from June 2025 to May 2026, roughly 4% above the Rother average. That covered 541 recorded crimes over the twelve months. Both figures are published rates and counts, not calculations from the town's head count, and they describe a town that is neither a trouble spot nor a crime-free village.

In numbers, Rother as a whole ran at about 73 crimes per 1,000 people over the same year, against Battle's 76. A gap that size between one town and its district doesn't tell you anything useful when you're choosing somewhere to live. It's close enough that anyone describing Battle as "worse than the district" is doing so for effect.

As for the neighbourhood itself, population density averages about 1,116 people per square kilometre, unemployment is about 2% and about 2% of households are overcrowded. That's a settled, employed, uncrowded small town. None of those figures explains the crime rate on its own, but together they describe a town with little of the pressure that usually comes with a high one.

The mix matters more than the headline. Violence and sexual offences make up about 30% of Battle's recorded crime, against about 35% nationally. That category covers a wide statutory range, including common assault without injury, and it's the biggest category almost everywhere, so a share below the national one counts in Battle's favour. Anti-social behaviour makes up about 27%, against about 16% nationally, and that's the category where Battle stands out. Criminal damage and arson, at about 8%, and public order offences, also about 8%, both sit close to their national shares of 7%. Shoplifting is about 8% here and about 8% nationally, so no difference at all. "Other crime" accounts for about 5% against 2% nationally. Battle's crime is less violent and more irritating than the national pattern. That's why complaints on the local noticeboard outnumber anything in the court reports.

What happens after a report is a separate question from how safe the area is, and the answer comes from the force as a whole. Sussex Police charges a suspect in about 10% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which puts it 35th of 42 forces. About 48% of its cases close with no suspect identified. That's a force-wide figure covering the whole county, not Battle's own, and it doesn't tell you how likely you are to be a victim. It does tell you not to expect a quick arrest if your shed is broken into.

Battle is safe in a middling, unremarkable way. It isn't the crime-free idyll the countryside setting might suggest, and it isn't a problem town either. The worst you're realistically buying into is a neighbour who is annoying rather than one who is dangerous.
