Mostly settled homeowners in the second half of their working lives, and a fair few past it. Seven in ten households own their home. The typical resident is nearly fifty. Fewer than one in five are aged between 25 and 44. People tend to arrive in Battle with their furniture already bought.
All the population figures here come from the 2021 Census. About 72% of households own their home, about 16% rent privately and about 12% rent from a council or housing association. Private renting is the smaller slice. Landlords haven't made much headway in a town where most people bought in and stayed put.
The median age is 49. Only about 18% of residents are aged 25 to 44, the years when most people are building careers and families. The town isn't hostile to that age group. It's just priced and paced for people who have already got through it.
Modelled gross household income, before tax, averaged about £59,000 in the financial year to March 2023. That describes the town a few years ago rather than today, and it's a before-tax figure, so the take-home number is smaller. It fits a town of settled earners and comfortable retirees more than one of stretched first-time buyers.
Households come in several shapes. About 31% are one person living alone, and about 19% are a pensioner living alone, a group that sits inside the one-person figure rather than adding to it. Couples with dependent children make up about 18% of households and lone parents about 10%. Battle has as many pensioners living alone as it has couples with school-age children, which is why the High Street is busier at eleven in the morning than at school pick-up.
About 36% of residents hold a degree-level qualification and about 15% have no qualifications at all. Full-time students make up about 2%. That's a mixed town, not a commuter enclave of graduates or a post-industrial one. With so few students, the only all-nighters are babysitting grandchildren.
About 65 people live in communal settings such as care homes rather than private households. That's too few to change how the other figures should be read.
Battle's population profile is middling: settled and comfortable, older than average and light on young families. It suits people who have already made their big life decisions and want somewhere quiet to live with them.
