Yeading

West London's spare room, furnished in a hurry·Greater London·London

Yeading got its first review in 1861, when a visiting writer decided that dirt, ignorance and darkness reigned supreme. Its second came in 1874, when another visitor found everyone civil, and that is still about the best notice an outer London suburb gets from someone passing through. Hardly anyone built much here until after the war, and one square was still cooking on oil stoves in the 1950s while the address on the envelope quietly started saying Hayes. The Willow Tree pub, reputedly four centuries old, was knocked down in 2009, which tells you exactly how sentimental Yeading is about its history.
