Hillingdon

Uxbridge's well-behaved suburb, parked facing the A40·Greater London·London

Hillingdon gave its name to an entire London borough and then went back to being the bit of Uxbridge people drive through on the way to somewhere else. When the A40 was rerouted, the tube station was knocked down so the traffic at Hillingdon Circus would never have to stop, which is about as honest a statement of local priorities as any council has made. The new station won an award, the sort of consolation prize a place gets for making room for a dual carriageway. What's left is a sensible spread of 1920s semis, home to people who wanted the Piccadilly line and a driveway, and who use the driveway.
