Woolmer Green
Woolmer Green is where three district councils meet, and none of them seems in a hurry to claim it. Thousands of cattle once spent their last night before London here, beside the Great North Road through the middle of the village, and nothing livelier has happened on that road since. The baker, the butcher and the post office have all gone, and the old post office has since tried hair, furniture and wedding hire in turn, like a guest who can't decide what to wear. Knebworth got the station and Welwyn got the Romans, so Woolmer Green got the stretch of road between them, and people pay handsomely for exactly that.
