Hatfield, Hertfordshire

A stately home with a New Town parked outside·Hertfordshire·East of England

Hatfield is two towns with a railway line down the middle, and the planners who built the new half looked at the old one, palace and all, where Elizabeth I was once confined, and decided it was on the wrong side of the tracks. The new half then built the world's first jet airliner, lost the factory, and lent the empty airfield to Steven Spielberg so it could play Normandy. What grew back is a university, a lot of offices and a road called Comet Way, which is how a town keeps a souvenir of the jet age after the jet age has left without it.
