Potters Bar

A London suburb that escaped on a technicality·Hertfordshire·East of England

Potters Bar was Middlesex until the map was redrawn, London went one way and Potters Bar went to Hertfordshire, and it has spent the decades since dressing as the countryside while London buses keep pulling into its depot. The M25 at one end, Cockfosters down the road and a station on the East Coast Main Line make it the kind of town people move to so they can leave it efficiently. The pub on Darkes Lane is named after an admiral executed for failing to obey orders, a fate the town has avoided by doing precisely what the commuter belt asks.
