Is Hatfield, Hertfordshire a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Hatfield, Hertfordshire.

Hatfield gets more crime than the borough around it. The rate comes out at about 130 per 1,000 residents. That is close to a third above the Welwyn Hatfield average. The kinds of crime look much like anywhere else; there is just more of them. A buyer here is signing up for a busier police log than the parks and the commuter line might suggest.

The police recorded 5,833 crimes in Hatfield in the twelve months from June 2025 to May 2026, a published rate of about 130 per 1,000 people. That is roughly 29% above the average for Welwyn Hatfield as a whole. The figure covers a full year, so no single bad weekend is holding it up.

Across the borough, the rate for the same year was about 100 per 1,000. Hatfield's 130 is already part of that borough average, which means the town is helping set the bar it is being measured against, and the rest of Welwyn Hatfield must be running lower still for the average to land where it does.

The town is dense for Hertfordshire's standards of commuter living, at about 5,940 people per square kilometre on average across its neighbourhoods, with a university campus inside the boundary. Unemployment is low, at about 2%, and about 7% of households are overcrowded. None of that explains the crime figure on its own; it describes a compact, busy, working town, which is the kind of place that tends to generate more calls simply by having more people in it at once.

Hertfordshire Constabulary's figures for Hatfield over the same year put violence and sexual offences at 36% of recorded crime, against 35% across England and Wales, so the town's largest category is almost exactly the national pattern. That legal grouping is broad and includes common assault where nobody was hurt. Anti-social behaviour makes up 19%, against 16% nationally, the clearest gap in the mix. Other theft is 7% here and 7% nationally, and criminal damage and arson about 7% against 7%. Shoplifting is lower than the national share, at 6% against 8%, and vehicle crime slightly higher, at 6% against 5%. The extra in Hatfield leans towards nuisance more than towards anything that ends with an ambulance.

For a view of a specific house, the police's own street-level map shows reported crime around each road month by month, and a full year of it around the streets you are looking at tells you more than any town figure can.

After a crime is reported, Hertfordshire Constabulary charges a suspect in about 11% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which places it 23rd of the 42 forces on that measure. About 40% of cases across the force are closed with no suspect identified. Those are force-wide figures, spread across the whole county, and they answer a different question from the crime rate. They describe what happens if you are the one ringing in, and they are less reassuring than anyone ringing in would like.

Hatfield is safe enough for most people to live in without much thought, but a buyer who puts low crime near the top of the list will find this town's numbers working against them.
