Is Woolmer Green a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Woolmer Green.

Woolmer Green is a safe place to live, with crime well below the rest of its borough. Its recorded crime rate is less than half the local average. Nobody is crammed in. Almost everyone who wants work has it. Whatever crime the borough has, most of it happens somewhere else.

Police.uk figures for June 2025 to May 2026 recorded 418 crimes in and around Woolmer Green, a published rate of about 39 per 1,000 residents. That is roughly 61% below the Welwyn Hatfield average for the same twelve months.

Across Welwyn Hatfield as a whole, the published rate for that year was about 101 per 1,000 residents, against about 39 here. The borough figure is driven by its larger, busier parts. A village rate this far below it means most of the borough's crime is happening elsewhere.

The village is spread out, with about 1,250 residents per square kilometre on average. At the 2021 census, about 2% of residents were unemployed and less than 1% of households were overcrowded. Those numbers describe a well-off, uncrowded place, and they are context for the crime figures, not the cause of them.

The biggest category was violence and sexual offences, at about two in five of the crimes recorded here, against about 35% across England and Wales. That is a broad legal grouping. It includes common assault without injury, and it is the largest category almost everywhere. Anti-social behaviour made up about 23% here, against about 16% nationally. Criminal damage and arson came to about 8%, against 7% nationally. With only 418 crimes a year, a handful of incidents can move any of those shares by several points, so a mix that looks distinctive this year could look ordinary next year. Use the street view on police.uk to see where the recorded incidents fall. A handful of locations near the main road can account for much of a small village's total.

Charging decisions are a separate matter from how much crime there is. Hertfordshire Constabulary charges a suspect in about 11% of cases, against about 12% nationally. Over the same twelve months, about 40% of its cases were closed without a suspect being identified. Those are force-wide figures for the whole county, and they rank the force 23rd of 42 in England and Wales. They describe what happens after a crime is reported anywhere in Hertfordshire, with no bearing on how much crime Woolmer Green sees.

Safety is one of Woolmer Green's real strengths. The village sees a fraction of its borough's crime, and the small numbers involved make even the worst category look like a few bad nights.
