Wickham

Georgian looks, Waterlooville quietly stapled to the edge·Hampshire·South East England

Wickham is a genuinely handsome Georgian village, with a square most of Hampshire would kill for, a watermill built out of the timbers of a captured American warship, and a horse fair it has been running every May since the thirteenth century. The catch is the boundary, which sneaks off south and quietly annexes a wedge of Waterlooville, so a picture-book village ends up wearing a suburb's reputation like a borrowed coat. Inside the conservation core it is all listed cottages and planning rules that treat a new window as a criminal matter. Beautiful if you pick your street, and a Waterlooville postmark if you do not.
