Fareham

The town that bought a magazine rack and called it culture·Hampshire·South East England

Fareham is where the Portsmouth algorithm sends you when you accept that what you want is a driveway, a Waitrose, and a four-bedroom semi near a motorway junction. It supplied the bricks for the Royal Albert Hall and then spent the next century supplying them for Fareham, which is structurally similar but considerably less of a Proms venue. The Quay Street roundabout backs up to Cams Hall every weekday morning, and residents accept this the way a long marriage accepts the same argument.
