Trowbridge
Trowbridge is a county town that nobody outside Wiltshire can place on a map, which suits it fine, because it spent two hundred years being the Manchester of the West and got the redundancy package rather than the museum quarter. The wool money built the good Georgian houses and then left, the brewery went and its kit ended up in North Korea, and what filled the gap was a cinema, a Nando's and a Premier Inn arranged around a car park where a supermarket used to be. It is a working town that stopped pretending otherwise some time ago, and the people who move here from Bath tend to arrive muttering about value and stay because nobody bothers them.
