Who lives in Trowbridge?

For anyone buying or renting in Trowbridge.

Trowbridge is lived in by people who work for a living and own the house they do it from. Two thirds are owner-occupiers. The typical resident is in their early forties. Nearly three in ten households are one person on their own. Nobody here is passing through on the way to somewhere more impressive, which is either the appeal or the problem depending on who is asking.

On tenure, around 66% of households own their home outright or on a mortgage. About 18% rent privately and roughly 16% rent socially, which means the rented third of the town splits almost evenly between landlords and housing providers. That is a different shape from the towns where renting means one landlord company and a lot of short leases. Renting here is a settled tenure rather than a waiting room.

The median age is about 41, and roughly 26% of residents fall in the 25 to 44 band. That is a town in the middle of working life rather than one skewed to students at one end or retirement at the other, and it shows in what is open, what is busy and at what hour.

Household income, modelled for the financial year to March 2023, came to roughly £55,000 gross before tax, with about £41,000 of that landing as net income after tax. Both figures describe that specific year rather than today's pay packets, and the gap between them is the number people forget when they work out what they can borrow.

The 2021 census, which is the source for the population figures on this page, puts single-person households at about 29% of the total. Around 12% are pensioners living alone, a group that sits inside that 29% rather than alongside it. Couples with dependent children make up roughly 20% and lone-parent households about 11%. That mix, a third of homes with children in them and nearly a third with one person, is what makes the town read as ordinary rather than as a family suburb or a retirement stop.

On qualifications, roughly 28% of residents hold a degree-level qualification and about 17% hold none at all. Full-time students account for around 2%, so there is no university population distorting the picture in either direction. It is a mixed skills profile of the sort a working town produces, and it says nothing whatsoever about anyone's prospects.

Health self-reports are solid. About 82% describe their health as good or very good, and roughly 5% as bad or very bad. Across the wider Wiltshire local authority rather than this town specifically, preventable mortality is better than the England benchmark, and adult smoking runs at about 8%, similar to England. Those are county-level measures against a national comparison, not a verdict on any street here.

Almost everyone counted lives in an ordinary household. Of about 44,710 residents, 320 live in communal establishments such as care homes or halls, so the household shares above describe effectively the whole town.

Who lives in Trowbridge is a genuinely middling answer, and that is not a criticism so much as a description. Working households, a decent spread of ages, a real rented sector and incomes that sit comfortably against local house prices. It is a town of people getting on with it, and the data has never once suggested otherwise.
