Tregony

A port that lost its river and stayed anyway·Cornwall·South West England

Tregony spent centuries as a port until the china clay washed down from St Austell and quietly filled the river in, which is the most Cornish way imaginable to lose your entire economic purpose. What is left is a long main street, a pub, a shop that does the post office, and two churches for a village that struggles to fill one. The man who discovered titanium came from just up the road, and the village has been dining out on that since roughly 1791. Come for the quiet, stay because leaving requires a car and a reason.
