Torquay

Deckchairs by day, doormen by night·Devon·South West England

Torquay spent two centuries selling itself as the English Riviera, which is a bold claim for somewhere whose main import from the Mediterranean was the idea of putting a tower on a villa. The palm trees are from New Zealand. The town's most famous resident wrote about people being murdered in genteel settings and clearly wasn't short of material. What you actually get is a Victorian convalescence resort that never quite stopped convalescing, wrapped around a harbour that behaves itself all week and then doesn't, and a stretch of coast good enough that the marketing didn't need to try this hard in the first place.
