Kingsteignton

A Saxon capital that settled for the bypass·Devon·South West England

Kingsteignton is a town that decided a long time ago it would rather be near things than be a thing, and has spent every century since proving the point. It sits at the head of the Teign estuary with a bypass, three A-roads and a railway station that belongs to somewhere else, which is the geography of a place that watches other people arrive somewhere better. The one genuinely mad tradition involves roasting a ram every May because of an eighth-century water shortage, and it is the single most decisive thing anyone here has done about drainage. The rest is bungalows, and the bungalows are lovely, and nobody is pretending otherwise.
