What are the schools like in Kingsteignton?

For anyone buying or renting in Kingsteignton.

The schools are the least contentious thing about Kingsteignton. Three primaries sit inside the town, one of them carrying its name. The secondary is a walk rather than a bus contract. Across the county, roughly four in five graded settings come out good or better. It is a dull answer, and dull is exactly what parents are shopping for.

Ofsted has published a grade for 172 settings across Devon, the authority Kingsteignton belongs to, and 138 of those, roughly four in five, sit at good or better. Three hold an outstanding grade, 31 require improvement and three are rated inadequate. A further 135 settings carry no published grade at all, which means not yet inspected rather than quietly failing, and folding them into the total would be a lie of arithmetic. These are county-wide counts, so they describe the pool the town draws from rather than the town's own classrooms.

Living near a school and getting into it are two separate transactions, and only one of them is decided by an estate agent. Admissions run on Devon's criteria for the year of entry, which can move, and a school name printed on a listing is a hope rather than a place. Check the criteria for the actual year your child would start, before a postcode does your thinking for you.

The primaries with the town's name on them are Kingsteignton School, Rydon Primary School and St Michael's Church of England Primary School. Teign School is the local secondary and carries a sixth form, so the fifteen-year-old does not have to be relocated at sixteen. Newton Abbot College sits within reach for families who want a second option, and the wider area holds a long register of further primaries, a couple more secondaries and a set of schools outside the standard primary and secondary categories. In the Department for Transport's 2019 modelling, a primary is about 11 minutes on foot and a secondary about 17, which is the sort of geography that quietly removes a car journey from both ends of the day.

Schooling is one of the strong cards this town holds, and the reason is unglamorous: the odds across the county are good, the choice at both ends is real, and the walk is short enough that nobody has to negotiate about it in February.
