Torpoint

Cornwall's front door, permanently ajar for Plymouth·Cornwall·South West England

Torpoint is a town that faces Plymouth the way a divorced man faces his old house from across the road. A Georgian landowner drew it on a grid in the 1770s, the dockyard filled it with people who worked over the water, and the ferry has been quietly moving the entire town's ambitions back and forth ever since. It is Cornwall in the way a passport is a nationality: technically correct, and nobody who lives here would let you say otherwise. What it actually is, is a naval town that got a sea view thrown in and never made a fuss about it.
