Callington
Callington is a Cornish market town that spent the nineteenth century pulling silver out of the ground and the twentieth century turning out pasties, which is either a decline or a sensible pivot depending on how hungry you are. It sits between two moors on a crossroads, and the crossroads is the point: everyone here is going somewhere else, mostly Plymouth, mostly by car, because the railway that once ran to Callington got shut in 1966 and never came back. Kit Hill looms over it all like a reminder that the view was always the best thing on offer. The town knows exactly what it is, which puts it several rungs above the places that have started calling themselves destinations.
