Tavistock

A market town that survived everything except ambition·Devon·South West England

Tavistock is a town that peaked in 1105 and has been quietly pleased about it ever since. The abbey got demolished, the tin ran out, the copper ran out, the railway got taken away twice, and the response each time was to hold the Friday market anyway. It produced Francis Drake, sent him off to circumnavigate the planet, and then went back to selling cabbages under the same charter. Come here if you want somewhere that has already survived everything it was going to be good at.
