Newquay
Newquay is what happens when a fishing village discovers stag parties and then spends thirty years trying to take it back. The town sells surf to people who will spend the week face-down in whitewater at Fistral, sells pasties to people who will eat them in the rain, and sells sea views to people who will own them for eleven weekends a year. Somewhere between the barrows on the headland and the spaceport up the road there is a town that actually works, with schools and a rail line and people who live here in February. That town is mostly invisible in August, which is the only time anyone visits.
