Milborne Port

A port with no water, a market with no market·Somerset·South West England

Milborne Port has been trading on that "Port" since the thirteenth century, and there is no water anywhere near it. It was a mint town under the Saxons and the richest market in Somerset when the Domesday clerks came round, which explains why the place still carries itself like somewhere that matters and why the honest answer to what happens here now is Sherborne, fifteen minutes west. Its single greatest gift to civilisation is a lit firework thrown across a market stall in 1770, which put out a man's eye and gave English law its rules on who to blame when things get passed along. Nowhere else has built a national reputation on a squib.
