Sherborne

Two castles, one abbey, zero urgency·Dorset·South West England

Sherborne is what happens when a town spends twelve hundred years being important and then quietly decides it has done enough. There is an abbey where two Saxon kings are buried, a castle that Cromwell's man knocked about, and a second castle Walter Raleigh built next door because one apparently was not sufficient. The honey-coloured stone is genuinely lovely and the town knows it, which is why nobody here has ever undersold a house. Turing went to school up the hill, and the place has been faintly amused by its own alumni ever since.
