Merley

Merley is a 1970s housing estate that was very nearly called Oakley Garden Village, which tells you most of what you need to know about the ambitions in play. It sits a mile south of Wimborne Minster, close enough for the Minster to do the heavy cultural lifting while Merley gets on with the quieter business of driveways, cul-de-sacs and being pleasant. The road signs still say Oakley in places, because nobody ever fully committed to the rebrand and nobody has minded enough to fix it. That is the local temperament in one detail: a place comfortable enough with itself that it never bothered to settle its own name.
