Is Merley a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Merley.

Merley is safe, and dull about it in the best possible way. Recorded crime runs roughly a quarter below the wider council area's rate. Violence takes a smaller slice of the local total than it does across England and Wales. What does get reported leans towards shoplifting and low-level disorder. Safe here does not mean nothing ever happens. It means what happens is mostly small.

Police.uk recorded 1,090 crimes across the wider Merley area in the year to May 2026, at a published rate of about 63 per 1,000 people. That sits around 28% below the local-authority average. The rate is a published figure using its own statistical population base rather than the resident headcount, so anyone trying to reconcile it against the count on the back of an envelope will get a different answer and the wrong one.

The Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole average over the same twelve months is about 88 per 1,000. Merley's is about 63. Two numbers rather than an adjective, which is what a buyer should be asking for every time somebody describes an area as "quiet".

The surrounding figures describe the kind of place it is without explaining the crime numbers. Density averages about 3,200 people per square kilometre. Unemployment sits at 2%. Overcrowding covers 2% of households. None of those causes anything on its own, whatever the comment section under the local news story has decided.

On the police.uk categories, violence and sexual offences account for about 32% of recorded crime here against about 35% nationally, close enough that the gap is not the story. That category is a broad statutory grouping covering everything up to and including common assault without injury, so it reads far more alarming than it behaves, in every place it appears. Anti-social behaviour runs at 21% locally against 16% nationally, and shoplifting at 14% against 8%. Criminal damage and arson is 9% against 7%, other theft 6% against 7%, and vehicle crime 5% against 5%.

Charging decisions are made force-wide rather than street by street. Dorset Police charged a suspect in about 14% of cases over the year to May 2026, against about 12% nationally, which puts the force 12th out of 42. In about 35% of cases the file closed with nobody identified at all, which is the honest answer to the question people actually mean when they ask whether anyone gets caught. That number says nothing about how safe Merley is. It answers a different question entirely, and the two get blended by anyone with a point to make.

Safety is the strongest thing on Merley's record, and it is strong in the least dramatic way going: a published rate well under the wider area, a mix weighted to the petty end, and very little that would send anyone back to check the front door twice.

Check it for your address. These figures describe the wider area, not a single street. For recent crime near a particular address, use the map on police.uk.
