Chalford

Built by squatters, now policed by the conservation officer·Gloucestershire·South West England

Chalford is a village bolted to the side of a valley by weavers who ran out of flat ground and didn't bother asking permission, and plenty of the cottages on the hill were only made legal by the Victorians. The paths were so steep that donkeys delivered the groceries within living memory, and nobody has found a better answer for the walk home since. It still gets called the Alpine village, which sounds romantic right up until you try to reverse a car up it. This is the Cotswolds for people who wanted the honey-coloured stone and are prepared to pay for it in calf muscle.
