Winslow is mainly middle-aged homeowners with decent incomes and good health. About seven in ten own their home. The typical resident is in their mid-forties. Most households are comfortably off on paper. Students and twenty-somethings mostly live somewhere else.
At the 2021 census, which is the source for every population figure on this page, about 69% of Winslow's households owned their home. About 17% rented privately and about 14% rented from a council or housing association. That leaves renters a fairly small market. A good two-bedroom let tends to be gone before the photographs have finished loading.
The median resident was 46, and about 24% of people were aged 25 to 44, the age when most first-time buyers and young families arrive. The rest of the population leans older. People who arrived young seem to have stayed on and aged with the town.
The Office for National Statistics models median household income in the area at about £64,000 a year before tax, for the financial year to March 2023. That figure is gross, averaged across the wider neighbourhood, and now a few years old. It is enough for a family house here with some planning. It is too little to treat a detached one as a casual decision.
The make-up of households is mixed. About 18% of households are couples with dependent children, and about 9% are lone parents. About 30% of households are one person living alone, and about half of those, 15% of all households, are pensioners on their own. A town where one household in seven is a pensioner living alone has more need of a walkable high street and a reliable GP than of a nightclub, and it has the high street.
On qualifications, about 38% of residents aged 16 and over hold a degree, and about 14% have no formal qualifications. Full-time students make up about 1% of the population. Winslow is a place people come to after their education. The University of Buckingham is just up the road, and its students mostly stay there.
At the census, about 84% of residents described their health as good or very good, and about 4% as bad or very bad. Buckinghamshire as a whole does better than England on preventable deaths, and its adult smoking rate, about 8%, is also better than the England figure. Those county numbers say something about the area's health services and habits. They are not a measure of Winslow's own residents.
Winslow's population is a real strength. It is settled, comfortably off, healthy and unhurried, and it mostly welcomes new arrivals who plan to stay.
