Winslow's schools are strong, and the town has more of them within walking distance than a place this size usually gets. Most of the county's graded schools are rated good or better. The town has its own primary and its own secondary. A grammar school is a short drive up the road. The hard part for parents comes from the admissions system.
Ofsted has graded 94 schools across Buckinghamshire, and 80 of them are good or outstanding, which works out at well over four in five. Nineteen are outstanding. Eleven require improvement and three are inadequate. That is a county-wide count, so it covers Winslow along with schools many miles from it. Any setting Ofsted has not yet graded is left out of the count, and that says nothing either way about its quality.
Winslow Church of England School is the town's primary and the obvious first choice for most families. Places there, and at every other school, are given out under Buckinghamshire Council's published admissions rules, and a house near the gate does not secure one. Families in the surrounding villages have other options, including Padbury Church of England School, Steeple Claydon School and Pre-School, and North Marston Church of England School. The Department for Transport's 2019 modelling put the nearest primary about 13 minutes' walk from the typical Winslow home. For many families that is the end of the morning school run.
Secondary is where it gets more interesting. Sir Thomas Fremantle School is a free school in Winslow itself, about 18 minutes' walk on the same 2019 modelling, and it saves a lot of driving. In Buckingham, the Royal Latin School is a grammar and the Buckingham School is a secondary modern. With the selective school and the non-selective one in the same town, Buckingham is where Winslow parents work out how they really feel about selection. That question is usually settled at the kitchen table well before any child sits a test. If a family's plans depend on one of these three schools, look up its last few years of offers on Buckinghamshire Council's admissions pages, since a strong school in a growing area can fill up from a closer radius than it once did.
Furze Down School in Winslow serves children aged 5 to 19 with special educational needs. For families who need that kind of provision, a specialist school inside the town counts for more than any of the Ofsted figures above. The rest of the education landscape stretches to private schools nearby, with Stowe School and Akeley Wood Senior School both within reach, and the University of Buckingham up the road.
Schools are one of Winslow's real strengths. A primary and a secondary within walking distance, with a well-graded county behind them, is more than most market towns can offer, and the only real worry is whether a place will be offered when you want it.
