Whetstone, London
Whetstone is named after a stone that soldiers supposedly used to sharpen their swords on the way to the Battle of Barnet, and local historians have since concluded it was probably a mounting block for getting on a horse. That is the whole place in one anecdote: a legend about bloodshed that turns out to be about convenient access to transport. The Tube station puts Totteridge's name first, which Whetstone has borne with the dignity of a younger sibling at a wedding. Buyers who wanted Totteridge's lanes and couldn't stretch to them end up here anyway, under the same postcode, which is either a bargain or a consolation depending on who's asked at dinner.
