What are the schools like in Welwyn Garden City?

For anyone buying or renting in Welwyn Garden City.

Welwyn Garden City's schools are the part of the founders' plan that still delivers for families. There are 20 state primaries around the town. Three state secondaries take over from there. Nearly nine in ten of the county's graded schools are rated good or better. Ebenezer Howard wanted a town for healthy living and a full social life, and on schools the idea has held up.

The 20 mainstream state primaries in the area post an average Key Stage 2 maths score of 105. Between them they cover the town's neighbourhoods, from Peartree Primary School on one side to Templewood Primary School on the other.

For secondary, the choice narrows to the three mainstream state schools in the area, Monk's Walk School, Ridgeway Academy and Stanborough School, which between them post a pupil-weighted Attainment 8 score of about 46. Three schools means a short list. With only three state secondaries, every family's shortlist has the same three names on it, and the conversations at the primary school gate in Year 6 go accordingly.

Across Hertfordshire, Ofsted has graded 227 settings, and 203 of them are good or outstanding, nearly nine in ten. That county total includes 40 rated outstanding, 21 rated requires improvement and 3 rated inadequate. Those counts describe the whole of Hertfordshire, so they set the standard of the system Welwyn Garden City sits inside, and the grade of any one school here still has to be looked up by name.

Places at all of these schools are handed out under Hertfordshire's published admissions rules, so living near Peartree or Stanborough does nothing on its own to secure a place there, and the rules for each school are worth reading for the one you want before the house is chosen around it. Distance, siblings and faith criteria at the church schools all play a part, and they change the answer from street to street. The families who check this early tend to get the school they moved for. The ones who assumed proximity was enough tend to find out in spring.

Schools are one of Welwyn Garden City's real strengths, a strong county system with a sensible spread of primaries and a short, solid secondary list. For a family buyer, they are a reason to choose the town.
