Is Welwyn Garden City a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Welwyn Garden City.

Welwyn Garden City is about as safe as the rest of its borough, and a shade safer. Crime runs a little under the borough rate. Anti-social behaviour and shoplifting turn up more often than usual. Violence and sexual offences, as a share of all crime, turn up slightly less. Ordinary, with a shopping problem.

Hertfordshire Constabulary's records on the police's national crime website put Welwyn Garden City at about 96 crimes per 1,000 residents in the year from June 2025 to May 2026, roughly 4% below the Welwyn Hatfield average. That covers 5,267 recorded crimes over the twelve months. A full year of records smooths out any single bad weekend, so the figure describes the town's normal, and the normal is unremarkable.

For the borough as a whole, the published rate over the same twelve months was about 100 per 1,000 residents, against Welwyn Garden City's 96. The gap is small enough that a buyer will not feel it crossing from one to the other. Hatfield and the garden city share a council, a police force and very nearly a crime rate.

The town is fairly dense for somewhere built around lawns, with an average of about 4,900 people per square kilometre across its neighbourhoods. Unemployment stood at about 3% at the 2021 census, and about 3% of households were overcrowded. Those are the numbers of a working, settled commuter town, and they sit alongside the crime figures without explaining them.

The mix is where Welwyn Garden City departs from the national pattern. Violence and sexual offences, a broad legal category that includes common assault without injury and leads the count almost everywhere, make up about 33% of recorded crime here against about 35% nationally, so the town is close to typical on the category that sounds worst. Anti-social behaviour is the clear outlier at about 24% against 16% nationally, and shoplifting runs at about 12% against 8%. Criminal damage and arson make up about 6% against 7%, public order offences about 5% against 7%, and other theft about 4% against 7%. The town's crime leans towards nuisance and the tills. Anyone weighing a particular street can look it up on the police's own crime map, which shows where incidents cluster month by month, and a home near the town centre shops will read differently from one on a residential close.

What happens after a report is a force-wide question. Hertfordshire Constabulary charges a suspect in about 11% of cases, against about 12% nationally, and ranks 23rd of 42 forces on that measure. About 40% of its cases close with no suspect identified. Those are the force's figures across the whole county, and they describe the odds of a charge, which is a separate matter from how often crime happens in the first place.

Welwyn Garden City is middling on safety, a little better than its borough and close to typical in the categories that matter most. The extra anti-social behaviour and shoplifting are real, and mostly the kind of crime that annoys people more than it endangers them.
