Wallington, London

Lavender country, paved over for the commute·Greater London·London

Wallington exists because in 1847 the man who owned Carshalton Park didn't want a railway near Carshalton, so the station was dumped in a field to the south and named after Carshalton anyway. The town grew up on that hand-me-down and has done very nicely out of it. Parents now move here for grammar schools that will only take some of their children, which is the kind of gamble people make with a straight face from a nice semi. Wallington left Surrey for London in 1965, and judging by the May Queen it crowns every spring, the paperwork hasn't arrived.
