Cheam

Where ambition goes to buy a nice semi·Greater London·London

Henry VIII built a palace at Cheam so elaborate he called it Nonsuch, and it was later sold and knocked down, which tells you how the place feels about showing off. The Northern line was meant to reach North Cheam and never got further than a report, and the cinema where its station would have stood is now half car park, half Wetherspoons. Tony Hancock turned Cheam into a byword for suburban pretension, and it has spent the decades since being too comfortable to take offence. Even the posh school packed up for Berkshire, and the people who could have followed it kept the semi and the park instead.
