Belmont, Sutton

The village a railway station made up·Greater London·London

Belmont started out as a railway station named after a pub called the California Arms, and has spent every year since being slightly more sensible than that. The village grew up to serve the asylum next door, the asylum became a prison, and the old psychiatric hospital was knocked down and rebuilt as an estate called Belmont Heights, which is how a developer says "please stop asking what used to be here." What's left is a short run of independent shops between the station and the church, with Sutton up the road for anything bigger. The pub has since gone back to calling itself the California, because somebody round here still misses the glamour.
