What are the schools like in Belmont, Sutton?

For anyone buying or renting in Belmont, Sutton.

Very good, and the hard part is getting in. Nearly every graded school in Sutton comes out good or better. None is rated inadequate. The local primaries post strong maths results. In Belmont, buying the house is the easy bit, and the school place is the one with competition.

The Department for Education counts three mainstream state primaries in the area, and their pupils averaged a maths score of about 109 at the end of primary school. Avenue Primary Academy, Cuddington Croft Primary School and Nursery, and Devonshire Primary School are the named primaries nearby. The Department for Transport modelled the walk from a Belmont home to the nearest primary at about 11 minutes, though that figure dates from 2019 and assumes the child walks at an adult's pace without stopping to inspect every wall.

Two mainstream state secondaries serve the area, and their pupils averaged an Attainment 8 score of about 53, weighted by the number of pupils in each school. Harris Academy Sutton and Overton Grange School are the two named secondaries. The same 2019 model puts the walk to a secondary at about 17 minutes, which is long enough for a parent's escort duty to end quietly somewhere around the first winter of secondary school. Greenholm School and Seaton House School are also on the local list, outside the state mainstream.

Across the London Borough of Sutton, Ofsted has published a grade for 28 settings, and 27 of them are good or outstanding, which is all but one. Nine of those are outstanding, one requires improvement and none is inadequate. Another 25 settings in the borough have no published grade yet, which means they have not been graded and says nothing about how good they are. A borough where only one graded school falls below good leaves parents very little to worry about, and they find something to worry about anyway.

All of this comes with a practical limit. Sutton Council allocates places by its published admissions rules, so a house near Cuddington Croft or Overton Grange buys a shorter walk to the gate and nothing more certain than that. Ask the council how far away the last child offered a place lived in recent years, for each school on the shortlist, because that distance shifts and the walk from the front door does not. Parents who skip that step tend to learn the rules in the spring their child is due to start, with an allocation letter in hand.

Of everything a family weighs up in Belmont, the schools need the least defending. With grades that good across Sutton and results that strong nearby, the question is which school will offer a place.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
