Raynes Park

A grand garden suburb that settled for sensible·Greater London·London

Raynes Park is the address people round up to Wimbledon at dinner parties, and it puts up with this with the patience of a place that knows where the station is. The man who planned it as a grand garden suburb spent the years that mattered as Chief Justice of Bengal, so much of his vision turned into a golf course and the rest was finished by an interwar builder whose houses locals still call by his name. South of the railway lie twelve terraced roads known as the Apostles, not one of them named after an apostle, which is about as much effort as the place has ever put into branding. Round up if you like; the people who live here stopped needing to years ago.
