Newbury, Berkshire

Where the missiles left and the traffic stayed·Berkshire·South East England

Newbury has made its living for three centuries by being halfway to somewhere nicer, first as the coaching stop for Georgians heading to Bath and now as the place where the M4 meets the A34. When the Cold War ended, the town broke up the runway that once hosted cruise missiles and buried it under the bypass, which is the most sensible thing anyone has ever done with a nuclear base and also the least romantic. These days Vodafone and the racecourse pay the bills, so the town spends its weekdays on conference calls and its Saturdays in a hat. Nobody moves here for the romance, and Newbury has never once pretended they should.
