What are the schools like in Newbury, Berkshire?

For anyone buying or renting in Newbury, Berkshire.

Newbury's schools are good, and the local rumour mill has very little to work with. About nine in ten graded schools are rated Good or better. None is rated Inadequate. The nearest primary is a ten-minute walk for most homes. The worry here is getting a place, not whether the place is any good.

Ofsted has published a grade for 23 schools across West Berkshire, the whole council area rather than Newbury alone, and 21 of them are Good or Outstanding. That is the overwhelming majority, with two rated Outstanding and two rated Requires Improvement. Nothing in the district sits at Inadequate. A further 42 settings hold no published grade yet, usually because they are new, have converted or have not been through a full inspection. They are unknown, not bad, and deserve a look before anyone writes them off.

The distances help. The Department for Transport's modelled journey times, from 2019, put the nearest primary about a ten-minute walk away on average, and the nearest secondary about 25 minutes on foot or around ten minutes by car. The school run is short enough that the argument over who does it lasts longer than the drive.

None of this guarantees a seat. A school being close, named, or well regarded does not mean your child gets in; admission depends on the council's rules for that year and how many other families applied. Check the admissions criteria for the specific school before you exchange, not after. The estate agent's "walking distance to excellent schools" is a description of the map, not a promise from the admissions office.

A handful of names tell you what the town looks like on a school map. St Bartholomew's School, Park House School and Trinity School are the three secondaries in and around the town itself, with Kennet School over in Thatcham for families on the eastern side. Speenhamland School carries the name of the old coaching quarter, which is the closest most children get to the town's history lesson on welfare reform. Francis Baily Primary School is named after a local astronomer, so at least one head teacher can point at the sky and call it heritage.

Two outliers are worth knowing. Mary Hare School is a residential special school for deaf pupils, so families with that need have a specialist option on the doorstep instead of a long commute. Newbury College covers further and higher education, which means sixth-form-age students have a choice beyond staying on at school. Beyond those, the surrounding villages run their own small primaries, many of them Church of England schools, and the independent schools nearby round out a crowded field.

Schooling is one of Newbury's real strengths, and the only thing a buyer needs to fight is the admissions deadline.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
