Kennington

Westminster's back garden, where the protests do their warm-up·Greater London·London

Kennington has belonged to the heir to the throne since the Black Prince, and the landlord's first big renovation was Henry VIII stripping the palace for parts to build Whitehall. The Duchy of Cornwall still owns a good slice of the streets, so the Georgian terraces look like old money while most of the neighbours rent from the council or, in effect, a prince. Estate agents stretch the name over anything within earshot of the Oval, because Kennington sounds like a cricket tea and Elephant and Castle sounds like a roundabout. The common where Jacobites were hanged and poll tax marchers set off is now a park for dog walkers, which is about the most English retirement a field can have.
