Hythe, Kent

A port that lost the sea and kept the attitude·Kent·South East England

Hythe is a Cinque Port that lost its sea and decided not to make a fuss about it. The harbour silted up, the army took a stretch of the beach for firing practice, and the town answered by forming a bowling club, a sailing club and a civic society. The last time the French landed here, the townsmen killed every one of them, and newcomers still find the welcome takes a while to warm up. Excitement is available in Folkestone, and Hythe would like it to stay there.
