Hawkinge

A housing estate that got promoted to town·Kent·South East England

Hawkinge is a town that wandered a mile west of its own village and never went back for it. What grew in its place is a hilltop spread of modern family houses in the Kent Downs, where the hills are ancient, the front doors are not, and a second car counts as plumbing. In 2007 it got a bypass so the traffic could skip the town centre, which residents had been doing on their way to Folkestone for years.
