Dover

England's front door, mostly used as an exit·Kent·South East England

Dover is the most famous town in England that almost nobody means to visit. Everyone knows the cliffs, and most of them have only seen the town through a windscreen while queuing for a boat to Calais. The Romans put a lighthouse on the hill and the Cold War hid a government inside the chalk, so the place spent most of its history being a fortress and only lately got round to being somewhere people live. It turns out there are whole streets of houses behind the ferry port, which comes as news to the lorries.
