Highgate

Where London goes to look down on London·Greater London·London

Highgate takes its name from a gate in the Bishop of London's hedge, built to keep his deer in, and the village has been particular about who gets through ever since. Karl Marx is buried in the cemetery, so the most famous critic of private property spends eternity in one of London's priciest postcodes, surrounded by neighbours who would object to his loft extension. The place is split across three boroughs, so anyone with a complaint about the bins gets to write it three times. The view over London from the top of the hill is free, and it is the only thing that is.
