Chadwell St Mary

Medieval church, post-war everything else·Essex·East of England

Chadwell St Mary had to bolt a saint onto its name so nobody would mix it up with Chadwell Heath, and the rest of Essex has been mixing it up anyway. The Norman church still stares out over the marshes towards Tilbury, while the post-war estates behind it get on with the school run and the drive into Grays. The holy well the place is named after was last seen in Victorian times, so treat any listing that promises "original features" with the same suspicion. Two of the men who helped send Charles I to the block lived in the parish, and Chadwell St Mary has kept its head down ever since.
